Coffee addicted in heritage town Melaka~Mod's cafe

When you talk about Malacca, you will think about Chung Wah Chicken rice ball, Bungah Raya Popiah or Capitol Satay Celup and so on... As a coffee bug like me, Mod's Cafe would be one of the choices in my must go list when i travel to Malacca.

I still remember that when my road trip to Malacca few years ago together with my lady and friends in couple, it was Raya holiday, and during the time the traffic in Malacca town area was highly congested. After we find the carpark near to the Red House Museum, we left the car there and walking into the heritage streets for the whole day street walk, finding foods and photography. After the whole day street walk photography, we came into the street passing by one of the special corner shop with the "Orang Utan" theme wall art, and walking into the street had saw some landmark like the temple and the mosque along the same street. While there was a shop that draw my attention which it has a classic Volkswagen Van well decorated in orange color, placed in the shop, and the van was equipped with the espresso machine!! It was a mobile cafe!

We drop by the cafe to have a bit stop to enjoy coffee time and rest before continue for the street walk photography. Of cause, being first time to the cafe, i would prefer to try their espresso and the cappuccino as the basic way to try out how good is the quality of the barista skill and the coffee they have. It may because of the influence by the barista championship that i used to photograph before, i always observe the process during the barista brewing the coffee, at the same time i would photography the moment when the barista focusing on brewing good coffee with their professional skills. After tasting the coffee, i just feel like refreshed with the drink of the day, it's gourmet coffee that the boss (also the barista) told me the bean they used was their house roasted bean and mostly were light to light medium roasted. May be because of the interest in coffee, after chit chat with the boss, he shares his signature hand brew coffee to us, that was Panama Geisha single origin!!! It was really addicted! Damn! the taste is unforgettable nice!!! Thanks to the boss!!

Unfortunately, the Panama Geisha was discontinued selling when me and my lady (my wife) had our 2nd visit to the cafe, but the barista in the cafe surprised us with the "short" brew espresso, and of cause, we were also trying their single origin hand brew coffee. I had my 3rd time visit to Mod's cafe alone recently due to my wife not feeling well and had rest at hotel, and this time the boss also giving me a "Wow!" I was rushing when drop by the cafe to have their hand brew before checking out hotel room during noon time. I was thinking to order for take away, but the boss insist that hand brew coffee cannot be take away, and he advice me to spend a little bit time to enjoy the coffee at the cafe, well i have to agree that. The only choice of hand brew in the cafe only left Ethiopia, and after sitting down a while, the boss brings a wine decanter in front of me and keep on swing the liquid inside the decanter, it's the coffee that he just brewed and seems like to breath the coffee!!! After a while, he just hand over the decanter to let me smell the aroma of the coffee before pouring out to the cup. How creative the way to breath the coffee in order to maximize the aroma of the coffee!!

Well, when i done the FB check-in, i saw a lot of extreme feedback about the cafe, mostly were either 5 stars or 1 star (highest with 5 stars) rating. For those giving 5 stars, mostly i would say are coffee lover who like the coffee so much and might re-visit the cafe due to the coffee knowledge sharing by the boss and also the good coffee; while for those customer who gave 1 star have a lot of feedback about the bad service given and mostly due to the way how the boss talking to them and they feel offended. Honestly speaking, I would say the boss is a "coffee Geek" who really crazy on making good coffee, he is really knowledgeable who willing to share about coffee, and he rather to not waste his signature coffee for the customer who has no idea about coffee tasting than keep promoting the expensive coffee just for earning the money. He did told me the main purpose he open the cafe is mainly his interest, he would like to bring out the gourmet coffee culture in Malacca, not to commercialise his cafe.

As a customer perspective, i agree that some time you may feel offended due to the ego like the service provided, but in the other way round, I would rather being told honestly up front which at least the boss was generous on sharing what he knows and teaching the way to taste the coffee. He is really have the "Geek Characteristic" who are really focus on his passion, just like what Steve Jobs did to lead Apple in his way and passions! So, as a note for those would like to visit the Mod's Cafe (just my personal opinion), if you know nothing about the coffee, i would suggest you to learn how to taste the most basic coffee like cappuccino or latte without adding any sugar, and coming next to taste single origin in syphon and hand brew, as this cafe is very serious about coffee, and not for those who just wanna do their check-in for FB and IG to prove they used to be there.....
