Dancing Party

It was a brand new trial for me to have a shooting in a birthday party… I was invited by a friend, Vivian to have photo shooting on her performance at a birthday party of her friend, Susan in Sg. Petani. At the beginning my 1st thinking that it will be a stage performance, most possibly will be in door shooting, well, with a flash gun should be help a lot, but when comes to the day, she and her dancing partners told me that they will have performance at a pool side party….which mean it will be outdoor at night….this is really a brand new challenge to me especially at a location that I never been there….

After done the preparation like waiting for my friend to done make up, we traveled to Sg.Petani and met all her partners there to do a final rehearsal at Susan’s studio…during that time, I have a chance to observe and trail some shots regarding the shutter speed setting and the angles to capture the feel of dancing….well, it is still at in door but at least help me to draft some idea for the shooting. By the way, CK (husband of Mee Mee~Vivian’s dancing partner) also was another Nikonian D90 photographer to photograph for his wife…after a short rehearsal, we all heading to Swiss Inn Hotel pool side, there was well decorated with red carpet, flowers and lighting…out door buffet style with music around… the birthday lady, Susan was busy on meeting guests and invite them for seat, well…it is a girly night as out of few photographers, all guest are female…Susan is also a well known dancer teaching belly dance at Sg. Petani, and mostly the guest are her students and dancing partner…

After a light dinner, the performance kicked started as Vivian, Mee Mee, Shee Loo and Ginny are the first group to perform…at the same time, it is also for me to start re-adjusting my camera setting to suit to the performance feel…motion blur but with sharp for the subject…it is the main concern to me….it was tough as at outdoor and night shooting, there are limited light source and limited parties for creating light bouncing….well, this is the challenge…I can only depend on the available light around the stage and pool side and play around with the angle of flash gun hooked up with defuser…some experiment had done to put into shutter priority mode and slower down the shutter speed, it can provide me some motion blur but the subject is blur too and unable to see the dancers’ emotion on their face, with remind back the “creative flash” method where to swing the camera after fired the flash in slower shutter speed… I have the other idea, since the dancers keep moving, so I just fire up the flash to get a sharp image but in slower shutter speed to let the motion blur exist, and the effect is absolutely excided and give me the feel of movement and the emotion of the pretty face of the dancers are clearly seen during their performance….
